Swoyambhunath (popularly known as monkey temple) is an ancient temple complex on a small hill at the west of Kathmandu city. Swoyambhunath is most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Kathmandu valley. However for the Tibetan Buddhist it is second to Boudhanath. The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, shrines, and temples, some dating back to the Lichchavi period. The temple complex can be accessed by a long stairway with 365 steps or by a car road around the hill. Perhaps Swoyambhunath hill is the best site for Kathmandu city view.
